Before contact with Europeans, the Haudenosaune, a group of nations in northeastern North America also known as the Iroquois, had been developing a form of communication, primarily for political purposes, that used wampum, a bead carved from seashell.

Topic

The original purpose and evolution of wampum among the Haudenosaune (Iroquois) people, especially its political and communicative role.

Framework

Challenge Position

Main Point

While most historians have insisted that wampum was mainly used as money, its true significance for the Haudenosaune was as a gradually developed tool for recording and communicating political and social messages, especially in the context of maintaining peace among different nations. **Most Valuable Sentence:** End of the first paragraph:

P1: Challenging the Common View of Wampum

This paragraph introduces the Haudenosaune’s use of wampum, points out the common misconception that it was just "money," and argues that for the Haudenosaune, wampum was far more important as a political and communicative tool to keep the peace between nations.

P2: Early Forms and Symbolic Meanings of Wampum

Here we learn about the characteristics of wampum, its colors, and its early forms (loose beads and string). The paragraph explores the spiritual symbolism behind the colors and how even simple beads held meaning and were used for basic communication with spiritual beings, as well as for simple political messages.

P3: Evolution into a Political Symbol System

After the formation of the Haudenosaune Confederacy, wampum’s use expanded dramatically. Wampum belts with specific icons and symbols were created to encode laws and relationships among the confederacy nations, serving as records and tools for enforcing the law and maintaining peace for centuries. The symbols and arrangements had specific meanings, effectively turning wampum into a limited but durable political and legal communication system.

It can be inferred from the passage that the author would be most likely to agree with which one of the following?

  1. There is evidence that objects

    Out of Scope: other peoples

We never talk about any other peoples using stuff similar to wampum, just the Haudensaune and the actual wampum.

  2. The Europeans who first came

    Too Strong: insisted in spite

We only know that the Europeans misinterpreted the true significance. We don't know that they were ever aware of the true significance, and you would have to be aware of it in order to deliberately insist on using it the wrong way. It's possible that the Haudensaune were politely humoring the Europeans and "playing along" like wampum was just money to them.

    Opposite Causal Relationship

The first few sentences indicate that wampum came to be a medium of exchange among the Haudenosaune, but due to the Europeans. The Haudenosaune adopted a European use of wampum, but we have no evidence that Europeans ever used wampum to communicate with spirit gods, send political messages, or encode a Constitution (long-standing Haudenosaune uses).

    Opposite

Opposite: peaceful System vs. Means of Communication The first sentence of the last paragraph says that an important precondition for the use of wampum as a "deliberate system of symbols" was a non-peaceful association among a group of "warring tribes". Even if this answer had removed the "peaceful" part, using wampum to encode the Confederacy's constitution wasn't the first time that wampum was used as a "means of communication". Tossing beads in the water was a means of communicating with the Sapling and Flint, and string wampum was a means of communicating truce requests. Both of those predated the Confederacy formation.

  5. Correct

    Present day interpretations of the

    Why this is right

This claim is lovably weak. Can you imagine how bold the author would be do disagree with this? She'd be saying that "Present day interpretations of 100% of the symbols used in wampum are 100% definitively accurate." All she needs to believe in order to agree to this idea is that there is at least one symbol used in wampum that we're totally sure about. We get support for this idea in the middle of the 3rd paragraph: Council fires, possibly indicating talks in progress, were diamond outlines ... Yup, it's that obnoxious. If it possibly indicates "talks in progress", then apparently we're not totally sure what it indicates. Thus, not all present day interpretations are conclusive.
